THE MOVEMENT WORKSHOP

  • International Dance Company 530 West McNeese Street Lake Charles, LA, 70605 United States (map)

Description

Join us for a day to celebrate movement, our bodies, and the creative expression of dance.  The Movement Workshop is bringing together multiple instructiors, from different dance styles and backgrounds, to give you a day full of variety and fun.  The day starts with Mahogany and AFROBEATS. Jerikaye then brings us BELLYDANCE, followed by Megan Dereoun and SHIMMY CHOOS.  Matt Deville is up next with HIPHOP.  Elizabeth will round out the day with ELEMENTS.

Each class will be 45 minutes in length, with only short breaks in between to shift instructors.  You may come to the full day, or each indivual class of your choosing.

Afrobeats: Afrobeats music is a fusion of traditional West African dance styles coupled with American funk and jazz influences. In this high energy dance class you will learn first traditional West African movement and how it is paired with modern music today in Africa. Bring a towel, water, and energy because this class will get you moving.

Bellydance: A world of primal archetypal movements based on the feminine form celebrated by cultures all over the world.  Come get a taste of the world in 45 minutes!  After an introduction of yoga warm up and conditioning, we will slide into our serpentine slow-flow, examining the endless loops and figure eights the body can make.  Then we'll flip it quick- and-dirty,  fast tempo style, hips a-bouncing.  We will end with a cool down to release the lower back and restore the body. Come with an open heart and leave with a joyful spirit!

Shimmy Choos: Come let your hair down and your heels up in a fun choreography based beginner heels class! Catering to the heels enthusiast and non-dancers, you will explore your body using different poses, floor work and walking techniques! Heels are not required, and knee pads are highly recommended!

HipHop: High energy class that infuses new school hip hop with an old school feel. This class will make you move like you never thought you could! All while teaching you rhythm and musicality at the same time!

Elements:. There is something about dancing to heavy drums that is both grounding and releasing at the same time. Class will start with a grounding warmup to facilitate awareness and presence in your body. We will then explore the four elements; wind, water, earth, and fire and how they are uniquely expressed within you. We will end with the high energy of native footwork. Beginning with information provided from Acosia Red Elk, a competative pow wow dancer, on the history of pow wow and origins of the different styles of dance. We will then learn some of the dance movement, and bring it all together with music.  This mix will energize and ground you as we get the heart pumping, hair flying, and allowing our bodies to lead the way.  Class will conclude with a dance circle, which is a fun way to connect to each other and yourself. Finding your own creative expression of the music. Make sure to bring a towel and bottle of water.

What you need:

Water bottle and towel will be needed for all classes.  If you are staying for the full lineup you may also want to bring a snack.  Shoes with heels are optional, and knee pads are HIGHLY suggested for Shimmy Choos. Bring sneakers you can move in for hiphop.  You may wish to bring a hip scarf for bellydance, although it is not necessary.
